We are purveyors of time, writing our memories into the stars. Through storytelling we uncover mysteries buried deep within our bodies and the land. Pulling up vines in the backyard to uncover stones, round and cold as the moon. Our stories are not the same, but they are woven together through the land & waters that bind us, homes that cradle us, and bodies that carry us forward. When these sacred spaces come under attack we are made vulnerable - through chemical contamination, forced displacement, colonization, gentrification, and war. But in this paradigm shift we are learning to adapt and survive through legacies of resistance, interdependency, and ancestral knowledge. Walking through landscapes on the verge of collapse and renewal we reclaim sanctuary in our homes, our bodies, and in the ground below.
* This exhibition curated by Shanna Merola will run concurrently alongside “Site {Unseen}, a solo exhibition of Merola’s work on view in the second floor gallery.
This solo exhibition by Shanna Merola merges works from her previous series “We All Live Downwind” and “Love Canal; Evidence of Injury” to examine the intersection of ecological crisis, chronic illness, and toxic waste. Pulling from stories across the rustbelt it explores the impacts of extractive economies on frontline communities living in the shadow of heavy industry.
